Trip Tips

With the last trip to Brasil, after spending so many hours in the plane, I remembered some tips I had learned when I used to fly about 25 hours, each way, between Japan and Brasil.

Preparing to go to Brasil

As I wrote previously, I'm going to Brasil to my parents golden jubilee celebration, and I started to be very concern about the overweight I have accumulated in the last 2 years.

So, I started a restrict diet from 3 weeks ago, and well...I just found a perfect winter sweater to wear for the occasion.

And that is it, I'll be out for a couple of weeks. Don't change the channel kids.

Baby Mary

I made this illustration for a guy named Jesus (quite a common name in Spain), which has a daughter named Maria...

By the way, you can see more of my caricature work, by clicking in my logo on the left column.

My 3rd car accident

I was going to a barbecue in the countryside with four, out of my six brothers and sisters.

Since my 1st and 2nd car accident little fright, I got some few lessons from my older brother and had enough self-confidence to ask him to take the wheel myself.

It was a perfect clear day, in a deserted and dusty countryside road, and it seemed like a perfect opportunity for me to practice my driving skills.

That time, in which I almost erased half of my family off the face of the earth, left me with a reputation that still haunts me…

Cooking like mom

Lately I realized, looking inside my kitchen cupboard, how I am so much like my mother.

I used to be very critical with the way my mother’s storage system was a big mess. Many half empty seasoning sachets and packets, weird Japanese dried stuff here and there, peculiar colored liquids in bottles opened long time ago and lots and lots of expired spices…

Well, at least I can say that I’m cooking just like her.... apart from the food, of course

Showgirl poster

Showgirl Miss E.

I have a niece who is going to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah this weekend. How a Brazilian Nikkei, who lives in Barcelona, has a Jewish niece, is a story I hope to tell in the future…

I decided to make her this poster, since she loves to perform, and has this comedian showgirl character, which makes being with her a great fun.

I sincerely hope that will not be the case,
but I can't help but seeing all these similarities,
from a point of view of someone who lived in person the two first cases

Economics comics

A couple of months ago, I submitted a set of comic strips for a competition to a Brazilian newspaper. The comics had to be about international and (Brazilian) national economic situation. The prize was to be a three months collaboration contract with the paper

Unfortunately I didn’t win (damnit!), so I decided to have them published here, one per day, to a friendlier public.

Maybe if these comics become viral in internet, making me world famous, the Brazilian newspaper editor will deadly regret not choosing me, and he will offer me a juicy contract for life, and I’ll gently refuse it…

Well, time to go back to reality…sigh

Kangaroo mascot 2

Kangaroo Logo, the "i nens" is suppose to be his belly pocket

Store sign

Decorative vinyl to put on the show window

Once we had decided the definitive mascot and the features of the character, I proceeded to develop different aspects with it, like the business logo, the store sign and a decorative vinyl for the show window.

Ideoban 2012

Here is the definition of analogic/digital bathroom

I’m proud to present here a work I did, a couple of weeks ago, for a Catalan sanitary fitting manufacturer - Ramon Soler S.A -.

I was asked to make an illustration for their stand for a Bath Equipment Fair in Paris – Ideobain 2012 – representing a bathroom.

Since the elements they wanted to emphasize were the companies’ launch of this year, I decided to use a very clean line, kind of naïve; to be as neutral as possible in the spatial matter. What I had in mind, -and tried to express- was the everyday life of a contemporary young couple living in a city.

How to get rid of corruption

This week the Spanish Supreme Court convicted judge Baltazar Garzón with 11 years of disqualification.

He is a kind of mediatic judge here, who prosecuted some very controversial cases; like the case against Augusto Pinochet and the Argentinean and Chilean dictatorships, or cases against Franco’s crimes during the dictatorship.

For many Spanish he is a hero.

The sentence was concerning a major political case of corruption of which he was in charge. Apparently, he illegally ordered wire-tapping, to gather information against the corruption plot, recording the conversation between prisoners and their lawyers.

You can see some detailed information about him, and the case here.

Ironically, he was the only person actually convicted of all the corruption cases that are on the news nowadays in Spain.

Siberian cold days

Barcelona had some very cold weather in the past week, and I realized that I don't have suitable clothing options for these temperatures

Chiuarco & Paular bear

A couple of friends of mine sent, from New York, this book as a way to encourage me with my illustrator career.

It's a compilation of ways of drawing cute animals...
So, I decided to put it into practice.

Rethinking the way of living in the city

Once we had our dreams shattered with The Big Blow, it is time to sit, and rethink our way of living

I’m collaborating, with some of my illustrations, with the 'vida+fácil' group, which means “easier life” in Spanish.

The group was created with the intention to think of better ways of living in a city. An alternative to assuming a mortgage that will chain you for life to a place or for renting - with all additional expenses you have to face; taxes, estate agency’s commissions and insurances – which also makes moving a real problem...

You can get further information here

My first collaboration was some drawings for an article about 'cloud housing', published in the STUDIO online magazine. You can see the article here

The second, to which I put much more work , was a series of 5 panels for an architectural competition (BAM-012), explaining, by comic characters, the way of living in a building with cloud housing concept incorporated.

Each panel explains one aspect of the concept, such as management, sustainability, diversity and flexibility. All together they compose a storyline that shows you an alternative, and literally, an easier way of living.

You can see the presentation here

Kangaroo mascot

I wasn’t updating much around here because I was finishing some comic strips for a competition I’m going to participate. I hope to publish the strips here, as soon as the competition result come public.

And als0, I was working to create a mascot for an elder, children, pets and house care business, which is called “Canguravis i nens” – avis is grandparents and nens is children in catalan.

The business mascot is a Kangaroo, since this animal transmit, with it belly pocket, this sense of protection. I started to draft some versions of the animal, and realize that you can transmit different concept of the business, according to the way you represent the drawing.

I made to my client (and dear friend) three propositions:

The first one, more Disney like, has this aura of motherhood, and transmit the warmness and sense of care that is implied in the business.

The second one, quite abstract, has this friendly face and transmit the idea of proximity, kindness and trustiness.

The third one is inspired on Japanese characters, is cuddly and cute. It intends to transmit loveliness and affection.

The version my client has chose is …..tcha tcha tcha tchaaaan

The second one!

Here is the coloured version

The reason is that, since it has this neutral aspect, it helps to put him in different contexts (playing with children, caring the elder, walking the dog…), and his unique features make him easily identifiable with the company.

And you, which one you would choose?

PS. Drafting the Kangaroos, I actually realize how much they look like big rats with a bad mood face.

Sheizaf

I have this really great little friend, who came to visit me last November.

I made a portrait of her, while I was teaching her how to draw with my Bamboo tablet.

The image above is the drawing she made with the tablet. Quite intriguing, but also with a bit of girls' poetry and innocence.
